Design From Home Competition

A Length to Sit Upon designed by Matthew Hurley

In reaction to the current and ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we wanted a way to help support our design community, and so in April we announced the Design From Home Competition.

The competition was open to all Australian residents, entries to Design From Home could be furniture, lighting or accessories; from dining tables and chairs, to wall hooks and mirrors, entries must focus on local manufacturing in Australia. We hoped that anyone and everyone would think about entering, whether they were a student, architect, ceramicist, jeweller, stylist, a design enthusiast, or anyone interested in putting pen to paper

The winner not only had the possibility of having their product put into production with royalties on ongoing sales, but also received a cash prize of AUD $1,000, with the runner-up receiving AUD $500.

Since 2016, we've been working with local manufacturers and production teams to produce furniture, lighting and accessories, supplying to commercial interiors and homes around the world. In 2018, we began working with designers external to Dowel Jones launching the Sister Collection by Tom Hancocks at Sight Unseen OFFSITE in New York. Since then, we've been working with multiple designers across the globe on new collections.

"What started as a simple collaborative exploration between us quickly turned in to real-life manifestations, and then continued to grow beyond any expectations I had. I’d get regular updates with new colourways, expanding the chair into a full collection, to seeing exposure in all kinds of exciting large scale projects and publications around the world" says Tom Hancocks on working on the Sister Collection.
